A Call for Peace in a Time of Political Violence

"Political violence is an affront to the Prince of Peace and a rejection of the sacred dignity found in every human soul. It must stop.

From the tragic assassinations of Melissa and Mark Hortman and Charlie Kirk to the shootings of John and Yvette Hoffman, the shooting of Gabby Giffords, and the shooting at the GOP baseball field, to the bombing of Governor Shapiro’s home and the multiple attempts on the President’s life; this tide of hatred must break.

The trauma at last night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner is yet another reminder that political violence is deteriorating our democracy.

We pray for the safety of our leaders, journalists, and the law enforcement and Secret Service agents who stood in the gap.

But our prayers must be paired with a choice: to be peacemakers in our words and advocates for laws that end the scourge of mass shootings and political violence. Let us choose the way of love over the path of destruction."

-Rev. Gabriel Salguero, President of NaLEC
