A Heartbreaking Day for Immigrant Families: Latino Evangelicals Lament Supreme Court Decisions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C. | June 25, 2026 The National Latino Evangelical Coalition (NaLEC) expresses profound sorrow and deep concern over today's Supreme Court decisions affecting immigration protections, particularly those impacting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders and also asylum seekers at the border.

These rulings place thousands of families in uncertainty and jeopardy, including Haitian and

Syrian TPS holders who have relied on these protections while fleeing natural disasters, humanitarian crises, violence, and governmental collapse. For decades, TPS has reflected

America's commitment to providing temporary refuge to people who cannot safely return home because of extraordinary conditions. Today's decisions weaken that commitment and create fear and instability for families, churches, employers, and communities across the nation.

The Latino evangelicals of NaLEC are especially troubled by the impact these decisions will have on TPS holders who have built their lives in the United States through years of work, worship, community service, and family formation. We are also deeply concerned that limiting the ability of courts to review future TPS terminations reduces important safeguards of fairness, accountability, and due process.

The timing is particularly painful. As Venezuela continues to endure the effects of a devastating earthquake amid an ongoing humanitarian crisis, the rollback of protections for people seeking refuge from natural disasters and collapsing governments sends a troubling message to vulnerable populations around the world.

These decisions do not stand alone. NaLEC is increasingly alarmed by what appears to be a broader assault on immigrant communities, including indiscriminate enforcement actions, attacks on birthright citizenship, and the removal of longstanding protections for sensitive locations such as houses of worship, schools, and hospitals. Together, these actions are creating fear and uncertainty for millions of immigrant families.

"For us, this is not a partisan issue. It is a pastoral issue," said Rev. Dr. Gabriel Salguero, President of the National Latino Evangelical Coalition.

"Scripture calls us to care for the stranger, protect the vulnerable, and uphold the dignity of every person. Behind every TPS designation is a human being created in the image of God. These decisions will affect parents, workers, church members, and neighbors. They will also affect U.S. citizen spouses, children, employers, and communities whose lives are deeply intertwined with those now facing uncertainty. We believe our nation can uphold the rule of law while also honoring the God-given dignity of immigrants. Justice and compassion are not competing values. They are essential partners in a healthy democracy."

In response, NaLEC and its network of Latino evangelical churches will continue to be the Church by:

• Expanding know-your-rights education and community preparedness efforts.

• Helping families prepare for possible enforcement actions.

• Supporting pastors and congregations as they accompany affected families.

• Lifting up the stories of U.S. citizen spouses, children, employers, faith leaders, and communities who will be harmed by these decisions.

• Advocating for permanent legislative solutions that include a pathway to citizenship and lasting protections for long-term residents.

NaLEC calls on Latino evangelicals, faith leaders, policymakers, and all people of goodwill to continue pressing Congress and the Administration to pursue humane immigration reform that respects the rule of law, protects family unity, and upholds the God-given dignity of every person.

At this critical moment, we urge churches across the country to pray, serve, advocate, and stand in solidarity with immigrant families facing uncertainty. Temporary protections cannot be a substitute for permanent solutions. The time has come for elected leaders to act with courage, compassion, and moral clarity.
