NaLEC Urges Humane Immigration Reform and an End to Indiscriminate Enforcement
(Washington, D.C.) — The National Latino Evangelical Coalition (NaLEC) raises a pastoral and prophetic voice against the indiscriminate immigration enforcement currently unfolding in the U.S. - an approach that fails to distinguish between violent criminals and law-abiding families who contribute to our churches, communities, and economy.
NaLEC President Rev. Gabriel Salguero, has stated, “For far too long we’ve had too much heat and not enough light on immigration. We are pastors. We are shepherds. We do not abandon our flock. We will continue to preach, protect, and prophetically challenge this nation to pursue a sober and humane bipartisan solution.”
For over a decade, NaLEC has advocated for bipartisan immigration reform that includes secure borders, a path to citizenship, and protection of due process. We support the removal of those who pose real threats, but what’s happening now goes far beyond that. Non-violent individuals, including our congregants, are being deported without fair hearings or legal representation - this is a moral and constitutional crisis.
Recent federal actions have only worsened the situation:
Attempts to end TPS and challenge birthright citizenship;
Termination of the CBP One App, removing a humane entry pathway;
Travel bans targeting those fleeing violence.
Detention and deportation without due process, often accompanied by family separation and racial profiling, contradicts both American values and the Gospel (Deut. 10:18–19; Matt. 25:35–40).
While speaking with CNN this morning, Salguero posited, “we affirm the right to peaceful protest, however, NaLEC condemns violence and vandalism. At the same time, we call on the Administration to halt immigration practices that separate families and erode due process.”
NaLEC’s Position Is Clear:
End indiscriminate enforcement that lacks discernment and compassion.
Pursue bipartisan reform with an earned path to citizenship.
Restore humanitarian tools like TPS and CBP One.
Uphold due process for all immigrants.
Stop racial profiling and family separation.
Stand with Scripture: “Defend the cause of the poor and the immigrant.” (Psalm 82:3)
